A mattress comprising a substantially air tight support portion 12b, the support portion having first and second air chambers 14b which are inter-linked to allow air to flow between. The first chamber contains a resilient means 16 such that external pressure on a chamber forces air to flow into the other chamber; and the removal of external pressure on the first chamber causes the resilient means to decompress, increasing the volume of the first chamber. There may be air conduits 22 connecting the chambers. A one-way air valve 29 may be present to allow the support portion to be inflated. Optionally, there are multiple support portions which may vary in size, shape, volume and density. The resilient means is preferably natural sponge or polyurethane foam. A patient movement monitor may be included which detects movement on the mattress by recording the air pressure in part of the mattress. |
