873,822. Mittens. AIR BABY Inc. Aug. 22, 1957 [Aug. 27, 1956], No. 26585/57. Class 141 A waterproof mitten 1, Fig. 1, is made by assembling two blanks of thermoplastic material, heat-sealing them together around the outline of the mitten, and turning the assembled blanks inside out to provide a reversed seam, Fig. 38. The fingertip region 5 is reinforced by attaching reinforcing strips to both the palm and back blanks prior to assembly. In Fig. 12, a blank 21 for two palm portions has a reinforcing strip 19 secured to it along the line 28 by heat-sealing. The back blank is similarly reinforced, Fig. 8 (not shown), and the thumb 4 has a reinforced tip 6. Complete thumbs 4 are sealed in the holes 26, 26a in the palm blank 21, and then the palm and back blanks are superimposed in correct alignment by engaging the holes 20, 20c over pins on a backing member. The assembled blanks are electronically heat-sealed together around the required outline of the mittens and surplus material is torn away. The palm blank has slits 25, 25a each forming a cap member 45, Fig. 29, to receive the fingertip portion of the mitten lining 9. The lining consists of knitted or woven wool, cotton or thermoplastic material, while the outer mitten and its reinforcements are of polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or fabrics impregnated with these materials. |
