Polybutadiene, of largely cis-1-4 configuration, is produced by contacting butadiene with a catalyst which is a reaction product of an aluminium alkyl with TiCl4 and I2 and in which the ratio of moles aluminium alkyl: moles TiCl4 is 1:1 to 30:1 and the ratio of granatoms I2:moles TiCl4 is 0,25:1 to 50:1 the "moles aluminium alkyl" being the sum of the moles of aluminium trialkyls, plus 2/3 of the moles of aluminium dialkyls, plus 1/3 of the moles of aluminium monoalkyls in the system. A trace of oxygen-containing gas is an optional additive. The liquid phase may be removed after the aluminium alkyl-TiCl4 reaction, additional aluminium alkyl being added so as to bring the required ratio to that stated, inclusive of the original aluminium alkyl. Many suitable aluminium alkyl compounds are mentioned and it is stated that when the catalyst is prepared in two stages other reducing agents may replace the aluminium compound in the first stage. |
