The drive device comprises an electric motor (2) and a battery (3) electrically or electronically connected to the electric motor. A drive train (4) is provided for driving an axis (1) of the towed vehicle. The electric motor is designed as a motor-generator converter (6), through which the battery is supplied with electrical energy when the motor-generator converter operates in the generator mode. A power converter (7) is arranged between the motor-generator converter and the battery.
