a -Olefins containing 2-8 carbon atoms are polymerized in the presence of a Ziegler catalyst supported on an inert inorganic carrier at a temperature between the beginning of the softening range of the polyolefin to be produced and 180 DEG C. The Ziegler catalyst is a reaction product of a compound of elements of Group IV(a), V(a) or VI with an organo-aluminium compound. The carrier may be bentonite, fuller's earth, pumice, kieselguhr, calcium phosphate, aluminium silicate, silica gel, active carbon or charcoal. The polymerization may be carried out in bulk or in the presence of a solvent such as a paraffinic, alicyclic, or aromatic hydrocarbon. The olefin may be ethylene, propene, butene, 3-methyl-butene-1, 4-methyl-pentene-1, 4, 4-dimethyl-pentene-1 or styrene and copolymers may be formed. The catalyst components specified are titanium tetrachloride, aluminium triethyl, diethyl monochloride, ethyl sesquichloride or monoethyl dichloride. In the examples, an apparatus for the continuous polymerization of ethylene is described, a copolymer of ethylene and propene is made and the polymerization temperature is 150 DEG C. Specifications 734,501, 790,195, 790,196, 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, 817,887 and 819,867 are referred to.
