The present invention provides a power converting apparatus which includes one or more harmonic filter units which suppresses a harmonic current of power inputted from the outside and supplies the current to a load, a current sensing unit which senses the current flowing in the load, a switching unit which switches on or off the harmonic filter unit, and a control unit which calculates a load rate based on the current quantity sensed by the current sensing unit and controls the switching unit to switch off the harmonic filter unit if the load rate is a preset level or less, and to switch on the harmonic filter unit if the load rate exceeds the preset level.
