The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device and a method for driving the same. The liquid crystal display device, which modulates image data to be displayed as the display luminance is increased, is capable of: reducing consumption power of a back light unit; reducing a display defect due to gray banding and gray saturation phenomena; and improving a consumption power reduction rate of the back light unit. The liquid crystal display device comprises: a liquid crystal panel which has a plurality of pixel areas to display an image; a data driver for driving data lines of the liquid crystal panel; a gate driver for driving gate lines of the liquid crystal panel; a timing controller for aligning image data from the outside to be suitable to drive the liquid crystal panel and controlling the data and gate drivers; and an image improvement unit for modulating the image data as the luminance of the displayed image is increased and controlling a modulation degree of the image data and a driving time of a back light unit according to a comparison result between the gray saturation amount of the modulated image data and the predetermined offset value. |
