Disclosed in the present invention are a device for estimating the optimum capacity of a battery power storage system and a method thereof. According to the present invention, the device for estimating the optimum capacity of a battery power storage system includes: an optimum charge/discharge plan unit which establishes an optimum annual charge/discharge plan based on a group of a plurality of pre-selected capacity candidates; a maximum saving rate calculation unit which calculates a maximum annual charge saving rate or a maximum annual charge saving amount for all of the capacity candidates based on the established optimum annual charge/discharge plan; a saving rate curve calculation unit which calculates a maximum saving rate curve for capacity and rated output based on the calculated maximum annual charge saving rate or maximum annual charge saving amount; and an optimum capacity estimation unit which estimates an optimum battery capacity and a rated output of the power storage system from the maximum saving rate.
