Provided are a banknote deposit and withdrawal device for enabling a customer to conveniently deposit and withdraw banknotes and a banknote deposit and withdrawal method. The banknote deposit and withdrawal device comprise a deposit and withdrawal slot which is formed on a case forming the exterior of an automatic teller machine and in which banknotes are deposited and withdrawn; a carriage unit which clamps and collects the banknotes deposited in the deposit and withdrawal slot and transfers the deposit to be withdrawn to the deposit and withdrawal slot by clamping the banknotes; a separation and accumulation unit which has a separation space in which the deposited banknotes are separated into a sheet and an accumulation space in which the banknotes to be withdrawn are accumulated; and a carriage transfer unit which moves the carriage unit along a trajectory between the deposit and withdrawal slot and the separation and accumulation unit.
