An operating device for the closure and fastening mechanism of a sliding roof of a vehicle comprises an operating handle 10 consisting of a transverse handle part 11 and a handle stem 12, the handle being adapted to be swung out of a handle recess 2 by turning through 90 degrees and then rotated about the stem axis to actuate the roof - fastening mechanism, a locking device 8 preventing the folding-in of the operating handle while the roof-fastening mechanism is unfastened. The handle is pivotally attached to a lug by means of a spindle 5 the lug being welded to a spindle 4 which is rotatable in a bearing member 7. The spindle 4 is welded to a lever 6 which operates the fastening mechanism. The handle pivots through 90 degrees about the spindle 5 and it has a spring loaded catch 13 which engages a notch 16 in the lug in its operative position and a similar notch 15 in its inoperative position. When the handle is turned through 180 degrees to operate the fastening mechanism the end 17 of its stem abuts against the locking device 8 and prevents the handle being folded to its inoperative position. The locking device 8, as shown, is a part-ring carried by the member 7, the arcuate extent of the ring being such that the handle can only be folded when the fastening device is in its fastening position. Cheeks 18 on the handle stem prevent the handle being turned through 180 degrees to operate the fastening mechanism unless it has been moved through 90 degrees to its operating position. In a modification the locking device can consist of a pin or a sheet metal part, the folding of the handle when a pin is used being prevented only when the handle has been turned through its full 180 degrees to operate the fastening mechanism.</p> |
