The method involves determining temperature of a body of an accessory belt tensioner (5) by direct measurement using a sensor. A preset operating process of a power unit is applied for limiting heating of the tensioner according to the temperature of the body of the tensioner. A damping device is adapted to deaden movements of a tension element by solid friction with the body. The application of the preset operating process is conditioned to attack by the body of the tensioner with preset temperature threshold.
