The feed of dielectric (e.g. polythene) covered cable 18 to a rotary shaver 11 which trims it down to a desired external dimension or to a desired capacitance/unit length is adjusted to maintain the centre conductor 18a central in the trimmed cable by the use of vertical and horizontal centre detectors 15, 16 which sense the capacity between balls 15a, 16a and the centre conductor 18a and operate through a servo-mechanism to adjust the position of centring device 13 relative to the shaver 11. The latter has shaving blades 12 which can be adjusted for a desired diameter of cut by rotation of collar 30 in a housing 34 in which it is screw-threaded; this rotation is effected by an annular disc 35 carrying studs 37 which slidably engage bores 32 in the collar, the disc being itself rotated by a reversible motor 38 mounted on the rotary shaver 11. For shaving to a preset capacitance/unit length a capacity detector 14 is used, which measures the capacity between the centre 18a and a water bath surrounding the cable, and operates the motor 38 through a servo-mechanism to keep this capacity constant. |
