Textile materials consisting wholly or predominantly of natural or regenerated cellulose are crease proofed by subjecting them at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C. for 1-60 minutes to the action of (a) hydrogen chloride or a substance yielding hydrogen p chloride, e.g. acetylchloride, the concentration of hydrogen chloride being at least 10% by weight and (b) a water-soluble condensation product of at least two molecular proportions of formaldehyde with one molecular proportion of a compound containing carboxylic amide groups, i.e. urea and derivatives thereof, ethylene urea, acetylene-diurea, thiourea, hydantoin, dicyandiamide, guanidines, urethanes and amides of monobasic or dibasic, saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acids containing 1-5 carbon atoms, or an amino azine containing at least 2 hydrogen atoms bands to the nitrogen atoms of amino groups, and if desired etherified with an alcohol containing 1-3 carbon atoms, in a concentration of 15-50% by weight, the treated material not being subjected to an afterheating operation. Suitable aminoazines are 2-methyl-4:6-diamino 1:3:5-triazine melamine, 2 chloro-4:6-diamino-1:3:5-triazine, 2:6-diamino-4-phenyl-1:3:5-triazine, 2:4-dimethyl-6-amino-1:3:5-triazine, 2:4 diamino-1:3:5-triazine, N-methyltriazone, N-ethyl-triazone and N-hydroxy-triazone. The treatment of the material may be carried out with a wholly or partially aqueous solution or in an inert organic solvent, e.g. dioxane, acetane, acetonitrite, an alkacol containing 1-3 carbon atoms, glycerine, ethylene or propylene glycol or a polyethylene or polypropylene glycol having a molecular weight of at most about 1000. The two reagents (a) and (b) may be applied separately or from a single solution. Immediately after the treatment the material may be rinsed with cold water, neutralised with a dilute solution sodium carbonate or ammonia and washed with soap or a synthetic detergent. Mercerized cotton fabrics which have been treated with a solution of a caustic alkali while not under tension and regenerated cellulose fabrics pretreated with a potassium hydroxide solution while free from tension may be treated. Reference is also made to the treatment of mixed fabrics of polyester and cotton fibres (30/70). |
