Various embodiments of the present invention provide a method and an apparatus for obtaining the trajectory of an object by using a multi-path tracking mode. The image object tracking method according the various embodiments of the present invention includes the following steps of marking a part of an object which is included in a frame of an image; obtaining continuous frames of the image which is marked at one part of the object; tracking the marked part of the object by estimating the sum of absolute differences in the continuous frames; comparing the estimated sum of the absolute differences with the sum of threshold values; converting a mode from one of a multi-path tracking mode and a single path tracking mode to the other depending on the comparison result; and obtaining the trajectory of the object which is marked at a part by using at least one between the single path tracking mode and the multi-path tracking mode.
