In catalytic processes for the treatment of hydrocarbons, such as polymerization, alkylation and isomerization processes, wherein volatilizable halide catalysts of limited solubility in the reaction products are employed, a cooling fluid is injected into the vaporous reaction products before their condensation in an amount sufficient to reduce the temperature to the dew-point. When the mixture reaches the condenser, sufficient liquid is present to dissolve any catalyst which may condense. The cooling fluid may be the liquid product of the reaction or a gas or vapour, and may be introduced continuously or intermittently. In the isomerization of normal paraffins with aluminium chloride and hydrogen chloride, part of the condensed reaction products from the condenser are fed back to a point just ahead of the same in an amount of from about 5 gals. per 100 gals. of reaction product, where the reactor outlet temperature is 200 DEG F., to about 60 gals. where the temperature is 340 DEG F., using a pressure of about 200 lbs./sq. in. The amount varies directly with the temperature and inversely with the pressure. |
