Compounds of formula R2AlX in which R represents a hydrocarbon radical containing no unsaturation at the carbon atom bonded to the aluminium and X represents chlorine or bromine are converted into compounds containing other hydrocarbon radicals by forming a complex of formula KR2AlX2 and reacting this with an olefin in the presence of an aluminium compound containing three valencies bonded to carbon or of an alkyl aluminium hydride or an aluminium hydride. Olefines of low molecular weight, e.g. ethylene, are preferred. The aluminium compound is usually used in amounts between 1% and 5%. It may be inactivated at the end of the run by addition of aluminium trihalide or an alkyl aluminium dihalide or sesquihalide. Specification 777,152 also is referred to.
