Class 126 [Also in Group XIII] A water-heating boiler for solid or liquid fuel firing comprises a burner mounted in the boiler cover above a combustion chamber partly defined by an upright water-jacket and a waterconveying partition which separates the combustion chamber from a flue outlet approximately halfway up the rear wall of the boiler, an outlet above the partition for the passage of the combustion products of solid fuel firing being closable by a valve during liquid fuel firing and an outlet below the partition for the combustion products of liquid fuel firing being closable during solid fuel firing. As shown, a watercontaining partition 11 extending between the water-containing side walls of the boiler separates the combustion chamber 2 from a draught chamber 10 from which a damper-controlled flue outlet 14 leads through the rear wall 12 of the boiler. The nozzle of a burner 7 is located in the top 6 of the boiler in a chamber 8 which during solid fuel firing is closed by a damper 16, leaving an outlet 15 above the partition 11. An ash box 20 closes an outlet 17 below the partition. During liquid fuel firing, the outlet 15 is closed by the damper 16 and the ash box 20 is removed, combustion products passing down through the grate 9 and the outlet 17 below the partition to the flue outlet 14. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the grate extends from front to back of the boiler, spaced from the bottom of the partition 11 to leave an outlet for the combustion products of liquid fuel firing which is closed by the solid fuel during solid fuel firing.
