An applicator for applying a coating of fluent material to an object, comprises a rotatable element disposed in a chamber in a retainer, an interior wall of the chamber being engageable by the element to limit movement thereof inwardly of the chamber, sealing means circumscribing the chamber and being engageable by the element upon movement thereof outwardly of the chamber there being means for introducing the fluent material into the chamber. In the arrangement shown, an applicator 60 consists of a ball 65 located in a chamber 64 formed by a cylindrical wall 64a; a generally conical wall 64b and an asperical wall 64c against which ball 65 abuts when it is in its uppermost position shown in Fig. 4. A sealing ring 68 is incorporated and the ball 65 seals against this ring when in its lowermost position as indicated in Fig. 3. Fluent coating material is fed under pressure through passages 69 and 70 and the pressure keeps the ball seated against the sealing ring when the applicator is not in use. In operation the article to be coated, e.g. box flap B<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, passes between the applicator and a plate 34 so that the ball is lifted from the sealing ring 68 and into contact with the asperical wall 64c. The coating material then flows on to the flap B<SP>1</SP>. The applicator cap 66 is recessed so as to form a reservoir 66c and the relative positions of the applicator and the plate 34 are such as to give the required thickness of coating. Several such applicators can be provided in a single head having an inlet for coating material and internal passages leading to the separate applicators. In such an arrangement the applicators can be arranged to give strips of coating material in any desired pattern, applicators not required being blanked off by suitable plugs. |
