923,826. Nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 16, 1961 [June 27, 1960; June 30, 1960], Nos. 22393/60 and 23020/60. Class 39 (4). A fuel element has helical fins intersected by four longitudinal flow splitter fins, three of the splitter fins being reduced in depth over most of their length so as to leave radial projections 23; this arrangement is said to prevent vibration of the element in a flow of coolant by forcing it against the side of the coolant channel. The fourth splitter fin 17 may be roughened or corrugated or may have a T- or L-section flange. To prevent instability when elements are stacked on one another the cylinder circumscribing the splitters may be eccentric relative to the axis of locating cups and cones, the engaging surfaces of adjacent elements may be flat instead of conical, or all the elements may be given the same orientation. Specifications 779,408 and 847,214 are referred to.
|
