A cleaning appliance comprises a main body (4, fig 1) and a separating apparatus (12, fig 1) including a dirt collector 24 having a base 26 that is openable to allow the dirt collector 24 to be emptied. The cleaning appliance includes an actuator 98 that is operable sequentially such that, during a first operation, the actuator 98 causes the base 26 to be opened and, during a second operation, the actuator 98 causes the dirt collector 24 to disengage from the separating apparatus (12, fig 1). A single actuator 98 is therefore used for two functions: firstly to open the dirt collector 24 for emptying purposes and, secondly, to disengage the dirt collector 24 from the separating apparatus (12, fig 1) for cleaning purposes. Such an arrangement is space efficient and intuitive for the user. The base 26 of the dirt collector 24 may be openable when the separating apparatus (12, fig 1) is coupled to the main body (4, fig 1) or alternatively the base 26 is only openable when the separating apparatus(12, fig 1) is decoupled from the main body (4, fig 1). |
