891,356. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. ADKINS & SONS Ltd., A. Dec.21, 1959 [Oct. 1, 1958], No. 31343/58. Class 42 (1). [Also in Group XVII] A machine for sealing the ends of a carton has a pair of clamping jaws between which the carton end is positioned and one jaw moves to clamp the carton end for a predetermined time and then releases the carton, the other jaw being heated electrically. The carton 37, which may be of cardboard, pasteboard or paperboard, has each end formed as shown in Fig. 3, the inner surface of the end flap 36 being coated with a thermoplastic adhesive. The fixed jaw 5 is heated electrically and the movable jaw 11 is spring mounted on a plate 13 reciprocated by a follower 18 and cam 20. The period of clamping can be varied by movement of a sliding member 22 on the cam or by variable gearing between the motor 27 and the cam. The drive from the motor comprises chains 28, 25 and sprockets and a clutch 26 operative for one revolution only and initially engaged by a treadle 29 through links 30, 32. The jaw 11 can have pieces 38 fixed thereto to suit cartons of different size and has springs 39 to hold the carton. The springs are adjusted by members 42 and 44 when the size of carton is changed. The heating is controlled by a switch 8 and a rheostat. A spring 19 urges the follower 18 on to the cam 20. |
