<PICT:0891270/IV (b)/1> In an electric arcfurnace (see Group XI) the crude oil or gasoline to be cracked is fed tangentially as at 4, into a chamber 1 so that the liquid flows around the walls of the device. The liquid surface is modified to the form shown by means of a shutter 10 and the space 8 above this (in which is located the electrodes) forms a combustion chamber, the space below the shutter and defined by the liquid surface forming a reaction chamber. The hydro-carbon to be treated may additionally be fed into the chamber 8 in a gaseous form through inlet tube 6. The uncracked oils fall in to reservoir 33 and are recirculated by pump 29 through cooler 30 into inlets 4 and nozzles 22. The cooled liquid issuing from nozzles 22 is directed into the reaction space of the device to cool the gaseous and/or vaporous products which are then removed through outlet 26. In a modification the shutter 10 is modified so that a gas such as hydrogen may be allowed to enter the reaction space. In one operation the reaction products included by volume, 70% hydrogen, 16% acetylene and 5-6% ethylene.
