[Also in Group II] In a process for mixing and homogenizing solid, plastic and viscous materials (especially polystyrene and polyethylene) the apparatus comprises a disc member 4 rotating in a housing 2 and having spiral grooves on its upper and under surfaces. The material is introduced under pressure by the passage 6 and is conveyed by the spiral groove on the upper side of the disc member 4 to its periphery, round its edge and back to its centre to be discharged at 7 ; a perforated disc 8 may provide back pressure and there may be an extrusion die 9. The spiral groove may be continued round the edge of the disc, see Fig. 3 (not shown). The clearance between the disc and the housing may vary or be constant dependant on the pressure relationships desired, but the volume of each element of the mixing chamber determined by a given angleαcontinuously increases towards the periphery of the disc so that the rate of flow of the material increases and its pressure decreases. Passages 14 may permit the escape of gas and the introduction of stabilizers, colouring materials and other additives. The disc member 4 is hollow and a fluid cooling medium may be introduced by the annular space surrounding the tube 12, whence it flows from the centre to the periphery of the disc 4, back below the partition 10, 11 and out by the tube 12. If a heating medium is required, it will be caused to flow in the reverse direction.
