A sample metering device for a liquid sample comprise a metering element 2 and a control element 4. The metering element comprises at least one capillary passage 3, 3 with a first inlet for receiving sample 20, and a capillary outlet (5, 5, 7, 7; fig 3) a side passage 9, 9 extending from the capillary passage part way along the length thereof and leading to an outlet (11, 11; fig 3), and a second inlet 32 which is ideally located between the first inlet and intersection with the side passage. The control element ideally rotates and comprises a first sealing means (40; fig 7b) operable to seal the capillary outlet and a second sealing means (40; fig 7B) to seal the side passage outlet. The side passage acts as an overflow for excess sample and the second inlet supplies buffer to capillary passage. In use, sample is added to the device via an application region (18;fig 3) with the first seal closed and the second seal open so that sample flow through the capillary, into the side passage. Subsequently, the first seal is released and the second seal closed so that a predetermined volume of sample flows to the capillary outlet. |
