PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle periphery monitoring device which allows a driver to easily grasp an obstacle recognized outside a taken image of the periphery of a vehicle being displayed and the relative positional relation between an obstacle displayed by an obstacle image and the vehicle. SOLUTION: The vehicle periphery monitoring device generates, as a concerned taken image, a narrow visual field region that is a part of the taken image of the periphery of the vehicle and computes an obstacle region that is a region in the taken image of the obstacle recognized in the periphery of the vehicle. If the obstacle region is included in a region outside the narrow visual field image, the device generates a concerned obstacle image including at least the obstacle region from the taken image and outputs an index image indicating the relative position of the concerned obstacle image with respect to the vehicle. The concerned obstacle image, the index image, and the concerned taken image are composed such that the concerned obstacle image and the index image are displayed as popup, on a monitor screen displaying the concerned taken image.
