<p>Method and apparatus for displaying augmented reality on a display of a handheld device, such as a mobile or smart phone, having a camera (10, fig. 1), comprising identifying a context 106 from real world images captured 104 by the device and selecting 108 and positioning 110 a virtual image (14, fig. 1) on the display. The displayed image (fig. 2) comprises a moving real world image. The context may be a point or object (12, fig. 1) of interest. The virtual image (14, fig. 1) may be a sequence of still images (20, fig. 4) from a moving video or a continuous video. The virtual image (14, fig. 1) may be a person or creature that may be an animated tour guide for a tourist attraction. Objects of interest (12, fig. 1) may be identified by comparing 106 features in a field of view (a unique outline of matrix points (12a, fig. 1)) with stored object data. A FAST (Features from Accelerated Segment Test) algorithm may be used. A virtual image (14, fig. 1) is selected from a plurality of stored images in a database (40, 42, 44, 46, 48, fig. 17) based on the identified context and positioned 110 and sized 116 on the display relative to the context. The virtual image (14, fig. 1) may be anchored 118 with respect to the feature of interest (12, fig. 1) and move with the object if the user moves the camera live view on the handheld device. A GPS and digital compass may be used by the anchoring 118 system.</p> |
