[Also in Group XVII] In a tool for crimping electrical connectors to electrical conductors including a stationary and a reciprocating die, an indexing device driven by the ram rotates a feed cylinder to advance a belt with connectors mounted on it so that connectors are presented one by one to the dies when the dies are open. A composite stationary crimping die 14, 16 is secured to the upper arm of a frame 8 by a bolt 18 and plates 12, 17 and coacts with a further composite die 24, 25 secured to a holder 20 by a bolt 26. The die holder 20 is mounted for reciprocation on a spring-loaded hydraulicallyoperated ram 4. Connectors are fed from a drum, attached to the frame 8, on a belt comprising two strips 80,83 of an organic thermoplastic material, the connectors being held between the strips. The feed is effected by sprocket teeth 36 on a composite cylinder comprising a circular plate 32 a sprocket wheel 34 and a ratchet wheel 38. The cylinder is freely rotatable on a fixed boss 30 and the sprocket teeth engage perforations in the belt. A cam-plate 46 is also freelymounted on the boss 30 and is biased by a spiral spring 62 attached at one end to the boss 30 and at the other to an arm 58 of a bellcrank the other arm 56 of which carries a pawl 57 engaging recesses between the teeth 40 of the ratchet wheel 38. In operation a pin 68 attached to the die-holder 20 first engages an extension 66 on the bell-crank to rotate the latter against the spring 62 and disengage the pawl 57 from the ratchet wheel, the pin 68 then continues its upward movement to engage a cam surface 50 and rotate the cam-plate 46 to the position of Fig. 9, whereupon the pawl 57 engages in the next recess on the ratchet wheel 38 since the pin no longer acts on the extension 66. During this time a spring-loaded pawl 76 engages the ratchet wheel to prevent its rotation. Near the end of the down stroke of the ram the pin 68 engages the arm 70 of the pawl 76 and disengages the latter from the ratchet wheel 38, the spring 62 then rotates the cam-plate 46 and the feed cylinder anti-clockwise until an ear 48 engages the pin 68. To prevent damage to the feed mechanism in the event of operation without a connector between the dies a recess 53 is provided in the cam-plate to avoid clockwise rotation of the ratchet wheel and the pawl 76 is bevelled so that clockwise rotation of the ratchet wheel would disengage it. The connector belt is held down to the cylinder by spring-pressed fingers 88 and a spring 94, the rear edge of the belt running against a plate 28. Crimped connectors are removed from the belt by pulling the conductor. |
