An apparatus for heating a travelling textile yarn comprises a mechanism for moving the yarn in substantially rectilinear paths, all lying in a plane, a chamber surrounding the yarn paths, a gas inlet and outlet positioned so that the gas can flow through the chamber substantially at right angles to the plane of yarn paths, and a device for supplying hot gas to the gas inlet. The gas is preferably circulated in a closed system at superatmospheric <PICT:0896929/IV (c)/1> pressure and the gas temperature thermostatically regulated. In Fig. 1 the yarn 11 is passed through the treating chamber 12 via guide bushes 13 and 14 and the hot gas passes through holes 15 and 16 and is re-circulated. Directly after being treated the yarn may pass through a false-twist head 29 before being wound.
