In a device for converting a rectilinear force into a torsional force, the rectilinear force P is applied via cross-pieces 2 to two rods 1 having recesses 3 in opposite faces spaced from the central portions of the rods so that the force P is asymmetrically transmitted through the rods, and the central portions of the rods are connected to opposite ends of an elongated torsional body 4 to apply oppositely-directed couples thereto. Force P may compress or tension the rods 1, which may be made of three pieces, each end-piece being secured to the middle piece by a steel strip so that gaps between the parts correspond to recesses 3. The body 4 may be a magnetostrictive sensing element of a dynamometer or stress measuring apparatus, being provided with exciting and pick-up windings (not shown) to produce a signal representative of the torsional force and therefore of the rectilinear force P. |
