A hinge, Figs. 1, 2, comprises two hinge members 9, 10, a link 21 having one end pivoted to the member 9 at a distance from the hinge axis 15 and a cross-pin 27 on its other end slidable lengthwise of the member 10, and a leaf spring 28 anchored at one end to the member 10 and closely slidably confining the cross-pin between it and the member to resist by its deflection the sliding movement of the cross-pin and thus to hold the hinge members yieldingly in various open positions, the free end of the spring being bent at 29 to hook detachably into an opening 30 in the member 10 and so limit the deflection of the spring, and the spring providing at its opposite ends full clearance for the cross-pin between it and the member 10. The spring is anchored to the member 10 by a rivet 37 having a thin head 38 which is designed to fracture in the event of the door carried by the hinge being thrown open too violently, so that damage to the spring is avoided. The spring is made with a transverse crimp 34 adjacent its fixed end to receive the cross-pin 27 in the fully open position, and the portion 39 of the spring intermediate its ends is inclined at a small angle to the adjacent part of the member 10 so that the resistance to the sliding movement of the cross-pin increases as the hinge opens and is sufficient, at least during the second 45 degrees of opening, to hold the door in any position. In a modification, Fig. 8, a second transverse crimp 42 is formed in the spring intermediate its ends and the portions 43, 44 of the spring are inclined as shown. The link 21 is formed from a length of wire bent to a substantially rectangular form, the coaxially aligned ends 22 being pivoted in a depression 23 in the member 9 and held therein by a strap 25. |
