Bulk and solution polymerization reactions are effected by use as catalyst of a solution of hydrogen peroxide in an inert organic solvent such as an ester of phosphoric or of phthalic acid. The H2O2 content of the catalyst is at least 10% wt. and the catalyst may contain additionally an organic peroxide such as methylethylketone, cyclohexanone, hydroxyheptyl, ditert-butyl and lauroyl peroxides, tert-butyl and cumene hydroperoxides, dibenzal diperoxide, tert-butyl perbenzoate and 2:2-bis-(tert-butyl peroxide)-butane. Catalyst components other than H2O2 in the Examples are:-(1) Et3PO4, (2)o-C6H4(CO2Me)2, (3) o-C6H4 (CO2CH2CH2OMe)2, (4) CH3 CO2CH2CH2OEt, (5) as in (1) + tert-butyl peroxide and hydroperoxide + Co octoate, and (6) as in (3) + methylethylketone peroxide + Co octoate.ALSO:Bulk and solution polymerization reactions, e.g. of vinyl and allyl derivatives and esters of maleic, fumaric and itaconic acids are effected by use as catalyst of a solution of hydrogen peroxide in an inert organic solvent such as an ester of phosphoric or of phthalic acid. The catalysts of Examples (5) and (6) were used to copolymerize styrene with the condensation product of phthalic acid (2 mol.), maleic acid (1 mol.) and propylene glycol (3 mol.). |
