The present invention relates to an apparatus for driving the motor of a motor-driven power steering system and a controlling method thereof. A motor can be stopped safely by controlling a motor-driven driver and a relay as control signals are complementarily composed by a main micomputer together with a watch dog part when a functional error occurs so as to halt the motor safely when the motor-driven power steering system enters into a manual mode due to a functional error. The driving electric current of the motor can be obstructed safely by complementarily installing an upper driver switch and a first lower driver switch respectively at the upper and lower ends of the control side of the relay, and the motor can be stopped while judging the normal stop of a motor-driving inverter via a phase voltage sensing signal and a driving voltage sensing signal. |
