The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for controlling a near field communication in a portable terminal. To this end, the portable terminal enquires whether or not to activate an NFC function of a user if detecting the occurrence of an event of power supply and conducts an authentication process for the user if the NFC function is requested to be activated by the user in response to the said enquiry. The portable terminal keeps an activated state of the NFC function if an activation of the NFC function is granted through the authentication process for the user and deactivates the NFC function if the activation of the NFC function is not requested by the user.
