The device has an actuating element mechanically connected to a seat fitting (2) for operation of the seat fitting by utilizing an actuating cable (3). One end (3.1) of the actuating cable is fixed to the seat fitting such that the end of the cable is located in a non-actuated state on a rotational axis (RA2) of a backrest of a vehicle seat (1). A rotational axis (RA1) of a changeover lever (6) is eccentrically arranged with respect to the rotational axis of the backrest. The actuating cable is coupled with a changeover lever such that the end is moveable freely in a rotation direction (D1). An independent claim is also included for a vehicle seat.
