A lifting apparatus for a refuse receptacle includes a plate with tines for engaging the pockets of the receptacle and also includes movable arms which may be moved from a raised position to a position with plates on the arms touching the top edges of the sidewalls of the receptacle. The movable arms retain the receptacle against bumpers on the plate and prevent rotation of the receptacle about the tines as the lifting apparatus holding the receptacle is pulled along a pair of vertical tracks by lift rods attached to pins on either side of the plate. The lift rods are connected to lift arms which pivot to pull the lift rods. Curved upper sections of the tracks cause the plate and attached receptacle to tip so that the contents of the receptacle are emptied into a hopper on a refuse collection vehicle equipped with the lifting apparatus.
