PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid failure due to an influence of a residual toner generated in association with running-out of paper to prevent a decline in productivity.SOLUTION: When paper detection means detects that there is no paper on a paper feed tray, an image forming apparatus controls a timing to separate a contact transfer unit from an intermediate transfer body on the basis of a result of comparison between a toner image untransferred time during which a toner image is not transferred on the paper and a separation time required to separate the contact transfer unit from the intermediate transfer body.
