The ends of beans &c. which protrude through serpentine apertures 18 in a rotating drum 12 are snipped by diverging knife edges 94 of a triangular cutter 22 resiliently pressed against the drum surface by means of a spring arm 48 releasably secured to the cutter 22 by a cross-bar 82 at its looped end engaging open-ended slots in tabs 100 projecting from the cutter, a further tab 110 having a slot 112 in which the arm 48 is free to move vertically. The arm 48 has its end remote from the cutter held in a boss 40 projecting from a bracket 30 clamped to an axially reciprocated shaft 20 (the complete machine having a plurality of shafts each of which carries a plurality of cutter assemblies), the body 32 of the bracket comprising a pair of projecting legs 38 carrying a plate 56 with a Vee slot 54 in which a spool 70 is located which surrounds and guides the arm 48, the spool being normally held at the apex of the slot by the resiliency of the arm 48, but being temporarily deflected up on to one or other of the Vee slots should deflection or raising of the cutter 22 by a foreign object in the beans occur.</p> |
