The method involves detecting a critical condition of a vehicle electrical system (3) and switching off an internal combustion engine (2) of a moving vehicle (1). The internal combustion engine is automatically started by kinetic energy of the vehicle. A non-critical state of the electrical main power supply of the internal combustion engine is started by an electrically connected electric motor (4) with an electrical system.
