The actuator (2) has a pump device (8) with a pump motor by which volume flow of fluid is pumped to a user circuit (14). A switching device (56) and the pump device are designed such that direction of volume flow without reversing the pump motor is reversed if needed. The switching device comprises switching valves (26, 68). A low-pressure battery (86) is hydraulically connected to the pumping device by a storage conduit (80). A pilot valve (92) or a differential pressure valve is connected to the storage conduit. An independent claim is also included for a method for building up and reducing brake pressure in an electro-hydraulic brake-by-wire braking system.
