The method involves recognizing a situation of a fuel tank of a car by an integrated in-vehicle recognition unit (E1), and recognizing signals (k1-kn) from image processing sensor units (K1-Kn) by another in-vehicle recognition unit (E2) for evaluating a selection of a wrong fuel pump nozzle. A warning signal (w) is output upon recognition of the fuel tank situation and the selection of the wrong fuel pump nozzle, where the tank situation is detected when the tank cap is open and the car is located in a fuel dispensing region of a petrol station. An independent claim is also included for a system for recognizing misfueling of a car.
