PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a positive electrode active material which is small in a free alkali amount even when the positive electrode active material comprises a Li-rich complex oxide and capable of being produced simply and at low cost.SOLUTION: A method for producing a positive electrode active material includes the steps of: mixing potassium carbonate and sulfate (A) containing at least one selected from the group consisting of Ni sulfate, Co sulfate and Mn sulfate in an aqueous solution state to obtain a co-precipitation compound comprising carbonate containing a transition metal element (X) containing at least one selected from the group consisting of Ni, Co and Mn; and mixing the co-precipitation compound and lithium carbonate, and firing the mixture at 500-1,000°C. A positive electrode active material contains Li and a transition metal element (X) containing at least one selected from the group consisting of Ni, Co and Mn, has a specific surface area of 2-15 m/g, and has a free alkali amount of 2 mol% or less per 1 mol of lithium contained in a positive electrode active material. |
