A brake arranged between the driving shaft 31 and the reduction gear 3, 4 connected to an electric motor 32, comprises a brake member 12 pivoted at its top by pin 13 and normally urged by springs on studs 17, 18 so as to form a circular plate 10 with friction pads 11, 16 thereon to the left into engagement with the gear casing 1 to hold the gearing stationary. The brakes may be released either manually by movement of a lever 30, which rotates a rod 26 so as to cause displacent to the right of the lower end of member 12, or by energization of an electromagnet 23 which drives down an armature 24, thereby also rotating shaft 26.
