The system (10) has a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalytic converter (32) whose upstream or downstream is provided with a mixture potential sensor (40), which is utilized for detecting ammonia and hydrocarbons. A first particulate filter is arranged at the upstream of the SCR catalytic converter, and a metering device is arranged between the first particulate filter and the SCR catalytic converter for reducing agent i.e. aqueous urea solution. A second particulate filter with a SCR coating is arranged at the upstream of the SCR catalytic converter. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control device for operating an exhaust system (2) a method for operating an exhaust system.
