PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact variable power optical system having a high variable power ratio and high optical performance, and to provide an optical device and a method of manufacturing a variable power optical system.SOLUTION: A variable power optical system includes, in order from an object side, a positive first lens group G1, a negative second lens group G2, a positive third lens group G3, a positive fourth lens group G4, and a fifth lens group G5. In changing magnification from a wide-angle end state to a telephoto end state, a distance between the first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2, a distance between the second lens group G2 and the third lens group G3, a distance between the third lens group G3 and the fourth lens group G4, and a distance between the fourth lens group G4 and the fifth lens group G5 are changed. A predetermined conditional expression is satisfied. |
