PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for adjusting a flow rate of shielding gas that surely reduces waste of shielding gas for afterflow in an inert gas arc welding/fusion cutting machine and that can be easily installed in a job site as a separate attachment without modifying the welding machine or the like. SOLUTION: The apparatus 1 for adjusting flow rate of shielding gas includes: a plurality of flow passages 12 for switching, each of which has a different flow rate; a flow passage switch 13 for changing over the flow passages 12 for switching; a control part 14 for controlling the flow passage switch 13; and a detector 15 that detects arc-ignition and arc-extinguishing and sends the information to the control part 14. The control part 14 is configured to automatically determine arc-ignition or arc-extinguishing by the information from the detector 15 and, upon determination of the arc changing from ignition to extinguishing, to change over the flow passages 12 for switching through the flow passage switch 13, so that the shielding gas of a constant flow rate smaller than the flow rate under an ignition state is made to flow as afterflow.
