A device, for example remotely operated, for coupling the opposed outwardly flange ends of a pair of axially aligned pipes 88, 90 comprises a housing 10 having an opening 18 therethrough and a radially extending wall 13 annularly disposed about the opening, a ring member 32 rotatably mounted in the housing and having an opening therethrough axially aligned with the opening 18 and a radially extending wall 42 annularly disposed about the ring opening, a number of circularly arranged cam slots 64, 58 extending through the walls 13, 42 respectively and a number of bearing members 70 each extending through one of the housing cam slots and one of the ring cam slots. There are a number of gripping segments 72 mounted in the housing on the respective bearing members and which are radially movable between innermost positions in which they are engaged over the pipe flanges to couple the pipes together and outermost positions in which they are disengaged from the flanges. Drive means engaged with the housing and the ring impart relative rotation between the housing and ring so as to cam the bearing members in the cam slots and thereby radially move the gripping segments. As shown, the housing carries a worm 52 which engages gear teeth 34 on the ring member 32, and a pin 98 secured to the pipe 88 passes through a cam slot 100 in a sleeve 48 of the ring 32 and an axial slot 102 in a sleeve 22 of the housing. The segments 72 are biased radially outwardly by an expandible circular spring 84. In operation, the pipes are disconnected by rotating the worm 52 so as to rotate the ring 32 anti-clockwise within the housing thereby causing the rods 70 to ride radially outwardly in the slots 64, 58 thus moving the segments out of engagement with the pipe flanges. During the initial movement of the segments, the pin 98 is engaged in a circumferential portion of the cam slot 100, so that rotation of the sleeve 48 will not cause axial movement of the pin. When the segments are clear of the flanges the sleeve 48 has rotated sufficiently to enable the pin 98 to reach an axially inclined portion of the slot 100 further rotation of the ring 32 drives the pin forwardly into the portion 106 and the pipe 88 moves axially forwardly through the housing to force the pipe 90 completely out of the housing.
