An apparatus for fermenting garbage and vegetable refuse comprises a substantially horizontal, rotatable container, which is closed at one end by means of a stationary end plate, in which an aperture for the feeding of the materials into the container is provided and which is supported on a base by means of supporting members which may yield to influences in the plane of the end plate as well as transversely thereof, such end plate being maintained in contact with the container partly by means of guide rollers, which are carried by the end plate and not on the peripheral face of the encircling annular flange protruding freely in the radial direction from the adjacent end of the container, and partly by means of retaining rollers, which are also carried by the end plate and bear against the side face of the flange remote from the end plate. In a preferred embodiment, a drum 1 provided with encircling rails 2 (see Fig. 2) rotates on rollers 3. End plate 12 is supported on two pendulum columns 15 which rest with a ball head in a bracket (not shown). Guide rollers 26 are distributed around the upper half of the circumference of the end plate 12 and are designed to run on the peripheral face 44 of an annular flange 45 (see Fig. 7). This flange completely encircles the container shell and protrudes freely in the radial direction. A number of arms 46 are attached to the end plate 12 and to each of these arms is attached a housing 47 having an internal fixed abutment 48 for a hollow screw spindle 49 which is in threaded engagement with the abutment 48 and a spindle 50. Spindle 49 is connected with a journal bearing 51 for a retaining roller 52 which abuts against the outer side 53 of an annular flange 45.
