Calculating timeout for remote task execution from network delays and processing duration on local application/hardware replica

The invention calculates time-outs/cut-offs for the performance of tasks by applications on remote machines 122.1/2. A server 111 obtains a hardware, application and resources profile of a remote computing device 122.1/2. Using the profiles the server configures a local duplicate of the remote device. The local duplicate may be hardware 133.1-3 or a virtual machine (VM) 137. The task application 135 is run on the local device and the time taken measured. The server also measure the latency of network 131 using pings/echo requests. The server determines the remote processing time-out from the measured local task duration and network delays, for example by addition plus a safety margin.
