PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a torque detecting device for a machine tool with a portal structure, which determines whether or not torque applied to a ram and tool of a machine tool is appropriate so as to prevent the occurrence of the situation that the ram and tool are damaged by excessive torque. SOLUTION: The torque detecting device 41 has: an allowable-cutting-force storage part 26 that stores cutting force allowable according to a state of a vertical lathe; a determining part 27 that calculates cutting force from the current state of the vertical lathe, compares the cutting force with the information in the allowable-cutting-force storage part 26, and determines whether or not the current cutting force exceeds the allowable value; and a display part 33 being a notification means that notifies the situation that the current cutting force exceeds the allowable cutting force when such situation is determined as a result of the determination by the determining part 27.
