The corn grains are heated in a kettle having an electrical heating element in its base controlled by a thermostatic switching element immediately below the base. Part of one form is shown in oblique underside view. The bottom of the kettle has a thickened annular portion 12 which is lagged with fibre glass 46 and in which is embedded the heating element connected to terminals 16, 17 controlled by the thermostatic element 18 attached to the central part of the kettle bottom. The kettle assembly is rotatable, for emptying, about a horizontal axis relatively to a stem 23 which is rotatable, to assist filling about the axis of a vertical supporting column. A protective casing not shown, surrounds the kettle and is apertured to permit air flow through the space between it and the kettle. The kettle has a lid in two halves, one being hinged to the other which is secured to the kettle by bolts and wing nuts 52. The fixed half carries an agitator driven by bevel gearing from a shaft 48 driven through worm gearing from a motor 22. The worm wheel and the remainder of the drive are detached when the lid is removed. The whole apparatus is enclosed in a glass walled cabinet. |
